Captain Vern Lewis started his maritime career lobstering in Clark Island, Maine when he was 14. He has been working on and around boats most of his life. At one point he left Maine to work for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut but after three months he realized that city life was not for him, so back to the coast of Maine he went.
After military service and maritime school, Vern worked in several local boat yards and at Bath Iron Works Shipyard as an Operating Engineer building Navy ships.
Vern became a licensed Captain in 1978 and started his first boat business in 1983. He has piloted boats along the East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, Africa, Brazil and Mexico. Vern now holds a Master 3000ton Oceans license.
Susan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked as an executive secretary at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. After moving to Maine in 1999 she worked as a legal assistant for a real estate attorney. In 2006 she started her own home and boat custom sewing business.
In 2009 Susan met Vern and they were married in 2010. They charted a sailboat for their honeymoon and even after two days of hanging over the rail, Susan was still excited about sailing and planning a future boat business together.
In 2014, after years of discussion and planning, Stella DI Mare Yacht Charters & Cruises was launched.
